Architects : Marta Mendonça & Gonzalo Galindo Client : Palos Verdes Art Center Program : Extension Art Center Surface : from 800 sqm to 1900 sqm Status: International competition, Semi Finalist
The solution for extending Palos Verdes art centre is based on the conservation of the existing buildings.
The project adds a pergola and three wooden volumes in a slide-down movement. The wooden and metal pergola gives the unity of the complex, joining old and new. Under this pergola, new outdoor areas are created: places for walking and stay, temporary exhibition spaces and a patio for sculptures exhibitions.
The pergola has a variable density grid following the activity that it covers. This grid works as well as a sun-shield and serves to accommodate skylights and solar heating panels. This multi-functional roof lies on a forest of pylons set according to the old structure in the existing building, but randomly in the extension, meshing with the natural rhythm set by the existing trees.
