The concept for the new museum of Beaux-Art in Lausanne stands in the presentation of two volumes – the houses of the Art – which lay on an ‘urban deck’, an urban surface giving place to the continuity of Lausanne public space.
The nMBA site, perimeter of intervention, is treated as a smooth topographic work and the relation between different surface textures. This new topography is transformed into the museum entrance esplanade, creating a particular situation between the museum visitor and other pedestrian recreational circuits. The coexistence of different pedestrian movements gives to the museum a public character, providing a natural proximity of different publics to the contact with the museum activities, events and finally with Art.
The project takes into account different issues on ecologic and sustainable systems for the performance of the building as well as in its environmental context. Solar panels are to be installed over the volumes of the exhibition rooms with no zenith lighting systems, which will allow the heating water mechanism. The immediate proximity of the lake gives the possibility for water-pumps installations for the general heating system of the building, as well as a power supplement for the natural gas necessary mechanism.
