The site for this housing scheme is the meeting place of two different environments. We wanted the architecture to reflect this duality by responding to the urban environment of Boulevard MacDonald and to the more natural green environment of the banks of Canal Saint Denis. The positioning of the building on the angular site emphasizes its presence on the street and signals the entrance to the building.
On Quai de la Charente, we propose a light double-skin external façade overlooking the canal to the west. Full height windows allow maximum brightness in living spaces and provide access to terraces. The inhabitants determine the dynamic visual composition of the façade, the changing pattern of their daily lives is reflected in the opening and closing of windows and shading screens, creating a random arrangement of solids and voids. The facade is clad in timber giving the building a warm natural presence in the green environment of the canal banks. Behind the timber cladding, transparent screens of bright colours give individuality to each terrace.
The north façade aligns with the adjoining buildings and responds to the heavily trafficked road of Boulevard MacDonald. The façade is animated by openings of three different scales. The voids which cut the building on this facade generate three volumes which give the building a lighter appearance from the street. This façade is clad in a white perforated metal sheet which reflects light from the east and the west. The composition formed by this cladding and the modular variation of the openings in the façade gives it a slight relief.
