For this extension project of Palos Verdes Art Center the decision of conserving the existing building is a way of preserving the evolution and history of the museum. The architectural response is to add a pergola and three wooden volumes. The unity of the complex, joining old and new, is maintained by a wooden and metal pergola. Under this structure, new outdoor areas are created : walking and lounging places, temporary exhibition spaces and a patio for sculptures exhibition. The pergola is a variable density grid that fits to the activity that it covers. This grid works also as a sun-shield and and helps accommodating skylights and solar heating panels.
